Supported range
Years from Meiji 1 (1868) through the current year on your device are supported. Future Japanese eras are not predicted. The tool converts by year rather than determining the era for an exact calendar date. Both eras are shown for 1912, 1926, 1989, and 2019 because the era changed during those years.
FAQ
Can I enter Reiwa 1?
Yes. It is converted to 2019.
What is the sexagenary cycle for 1984?
1984 is 甲子 (Kinoe-Ne), the first combination in the 60-year cycle.
What year is Showa 59?
1984, the Year of the Rat.
What is the difference between the Earthly Branch, Heavenly Stem, and Sexagenary Cycle?
The Earthly Branch has 12 signs, such as 子, 丑, and 寅. The Heavenly Stem has 10 signs, such as 甲, 乙, and 丙. Combining them in sequence forms the Sexagenary Cycle, which repeats every 60 years. This tool shows the branch and stem separately, followed by their combined cycle name.
When does the zodiac year change?
This tool calculates the zodiac from the Gregorian calendar year. It does not use the beginning of spring or other boundaries used by some forms of fortune-telling.
Can I search for Showa 65?
No. Showa ended at year 64, so Showa 65 is treated as invalid input.
Is my input uploaded?
No. Parsing and calculation are performed entirely in your browser.
